Cash till security should be a top priority for any business owner and employee, and there are several processes you can put in place to make yours as secure as possible whilst protecting your profits.
Here are our expert tips, and if you require new register keys or a more secure register, please call us on 01403 710711:
Assign operation keys to users
Most cash registers come with three operation keys at the point of sale, each with different uses that you can assign to different members of staff.
REG key
Allowing the operator to use only the REG key prevents them from taking readings and can often stop refunds being given without calling a supervisor.
X Key
The X key is normally for the manager and enables only them to take X readings, which may contain business sensitive information.
Z Key
The Z key is for taking the readings and clearing the till. This should only be with a senior member of staff, or with the owner of the company, as it provides the most access and functionality to the till.
NO SALE Button
If possible in your business structure, ensure that the NO SALE button can only be operated by the manager to avoid misuse. Most cash registers can be programmed with this function fairly easily.
Cash drawer processes
Consider purchasing an extra cash drawer insert which can replace the one being used when there are large amounts of cash being taken at peak times. This means that should a theft occur, it’s likely less money will be taken.
Then, when your business is closed, always leave the main drawer obviously open obviously and empty with no money in it. This will show any potential intruders that there is nothing to take and no benefit to them entering by force, or damaging the till to gain entry.
Additional security advice
• If possible, have the cash register safety secured to the countertop.
• Consider fitting a small lockable note safe under the counter to prevent easy access to larger amounts of cash.
• To prevent a cash grab from the till when the drawer is open, see-through plastic cash guards are highly recommended and widely available.
